Additional District Court funding a step in the right direction

The president of the New South Wales Bar Association, Noel Hutley SC, today welcomed the state government’s decision to provide additional funding to address criminal trial delays in the District Court. The attorney general, the Hon Gabrielle Upton MP, has announced a $20 million package to assist in addressing current backlogs in the court.

The Law Council’s Equitable Briefing Policy has been the subject of a review by the New South Wales Bar Association. A working party was commissioned by President Jane Needham SC and chaired by Junior Vice President Arthur Moses SC and Kate Eastman SC. The working party included members from across the legal profession, including barristers, solicitors at law firms, in-house counsel and government.

Government must properly fund court security

The protocol on guns in court announced by the government earlier this week obscures the real problem relating to court security, the president of the New South Wales Bar Association Jane Needham SC said today.

‘If there are concerns regarding the security of our courts they should be directly confronted, rather than through a patchwork agreement that enables police officers to now carry their guns in courthouses’ Ms Needham said.
