Hear from Tony McAvoy SC and Arthur Moses SC on the importance of the Statement and the role of the legal profession.
In 2015 the Federal Government established a Referendum Council to make recommendations on constitutional reform for the recognition of Aboriginal People and Torres Strait Islanders. In May 2017, a convention of First Nations People from across the continent gathered at Yulara NT adopted the Uluru Statement from the Heart as an expression of their aspirations for a path travelled together with all Australians to a new future. That future is one in which a Voice to Parliament is constitutionally enshrined and a Makarrata (or peace making) Commission is established to facilitate treaty making and truth telling. The Statement for the Heart was endorsed by the Referendum Council and has since been endorsed by NSW Bar Association, the Law Council of Australia and the Australian Bar Association.
This is an opportunity for members of NSW Bar and the Bench to show their support for the Statement from the Heart and the important issues it addresses.
A copy of the Uluru Statement from the Heart will be available for signing by individual barristers and judges to replicate the signing of the original by attendees at the Uluru Convention.
